read across america 2025

Merritt Memorial Elementary School celebrated the magic of reading during Read Across America Spirit Week with a week full of excitement, themed spirit days, and literacy activities that had students and staff buzzing with book joy!

The highlight of the week was the transformation of the school library into a Reading Oasis — a peaceful, cozy space where students could escape into the world of books. Complete with comfy seating, calming decor, and reading forts , the Reading Oasis quickly became a favorite destination for students looking to relax and read.

Also, each day of the week featured a unique theme to celebrate reading in all its forms. From cozy pajamas to workout clothes, students dressed up to show that reading is relaxing, energizing, empowering, and inclusive. The week ended with a show of school pride as students wore their Merritt Gear for the final Spirit Day to show that Merritt loves to read!

Throughout the week, students were also encouraged to Drop Everything and Read (DEAR), taking time during the day to pause and immerse themselves in a good book. Another favorite tradition returned as students paired up with their reading buddies from different grade levels, sharing stories and building connections across the school.

From themed outfits to special reading moments, Merritt Memorial’s celebration reminded students that reading is not only fundamental — it’s fun, empowering, and unifying.
